Annapurna North Base Camp Trek (Maurice Herzog Trail) is a remote, wild, and remarkably scenic alternative to the well-known Annapurna trails. This off-the-beaten-path adventure leads trekkers through lush forests, glacial rivers, hidden waterfalls, and untouched highland terrain to the north face of Annapurna I (8091m). Known as the historic route of the first 8000-meter ascent led by Maurice Herzog in 1950, it remains one of the least explored and most rewarding treks in Nepal.
This trail was first reopened in 2019 by the Annapurna Rural Municipality and has since drawn attention for its historical importance, biodiversity, and the raw wilderness it offers. Unlike commercial trails, the North Annapurna Base Camp requires full camping support, making it a perfect escape for those seeking solitude, scenery, and self-sufficiency.

The North Annapurna Base Camp trek is considered moderately challenging. Due to the ongoing Hydropower Project construction, much of the trail is covered in stones and mud, which can make navigation a bit tricky. Some sections are also landslide-prone and have steep, rocky paths that may require the use of ropes for support. Compared to other treks in the region, this route is a bit more demanding.
Yes, the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek is a camping-based trek. Since it’s a newly established route, there are no teahouses or lodges along the way, unlike other popular treks in the Annapurna region. All accommodations and meals are arranged through camping setups.
Highly recommended. The trail is lesser-marked and goes through dense forests; a guide ensures navigation and safety.
Not at all. North Annapurna Base Camp is a hidden gem, making it peaceful and ideal for solitude lovers.
